[Welcome again to Video Game Crafts ‘N Gear! This is a weekly feature wherein I shine the spotlight on three of the best custom-made, video game-inspired projects I’ve come across this week. Whatever the game and whether it’s art, crafts, toys, cosplay, animations or anything creative, if it’s awesome enough I’ll share with you wonderful readers!]
In-Game Duke Nukem Art
Alright, so Duke Nukem Forever was bad. Real bad. Possibly one of the worst games we’ve recently seen and by far the greatest disappointment ever. Despite this, amazingly, one artistic player actually found something great in the game–by making it himself.
DeviantArtist kopfstoff used the whiteboard at the beginning of the game and truly pushed its limits by using every in-game marker pen available for incredible detail. He says: “i never dreamed that one day, i would be able to draw duke nukem inside a duke nukem game. now i finally can, hail to the king!”. It looks amazing; almost Metal Gear Solid-esque. Kind of puts that crude penis drawing in early game footage in perspective, doesn’t it?
Super Modern Mario Bros.
Some may recall the awesome “Super Modern Mario Bros.” video last year, uploaded by talented YouTube user Deloix. It was a recreation of the iconic first level of Super Mario Bros., with realistic sound effects in response to Mario’s actions and a far grittier take on the game, as well as a fantastic 2.5D graphical style to evoke the “modern” approach that the creator was going for.
Now there’s a sequel, and it of course sees Modern Mario travel through level 1-2. It’s better and funnier than ever, with realistic brick smashing, explosions and a great surprise ending. Check out the first video below too, if you missed out!
Everyone has wanted to be Sonic at one point; it doesn’t matter if you were a child or a grown adult. After this video, you may not be so sure, unless your stomach has a high tolerance. This dizzying video of a first-person reenactment of Green Hill Zone: Act 1 is not only clever, but very beautiful and perfectly executed.
It’s just as good as Freddie Wong’s recent first-person Mario video, in fact. Seems that the rivalry between the plumber and the hedgehog is still going in many ways!
