In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Telltale Games CEO revealed exactly how successful their latest endeavour was. The Walking Dead has sold over 8.5 million episodes to date. “November and December were our biggest months. It was the culmination of the product, the game of the year awards, the retail push, and it still has a ton of head room in it,” he said.
The most profitable platform for The Walking Dead was iOS, with about 25% of the game’s revenue coming from mobile. “The episodic model has allowed us to create an economy that works on mobile. As far as size, at this point it’s probably about 25% of the revenue of the product and it is on the largest upswing of all platforms as well,” he continued. “I think we see with iOS products, we see more impact from when the show is on, when there’s stress about the show.”
Talking about how big the project itself was, he replied that The Walking Dead was made possible thanks to the company’s previous experiences with games such as Monkey Island, Sam & Max and Jurrasic Park. “It’s really the culmination of years of building to this that makes The Walking Dead possible. Our tools can do these things and we are just going to keep growing from there,” he said. “Everything has been an investment in creating great storytelling and great dramatic experiences that work across multiple platforms. Cost-wise, it’s 40% more expensive than other games, but it’s not huge.”
