Ever since the release of Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, it was evident how the new home of one of the most important Atlus franchises was going to be on Nintendo portable consoles. Shin Megami Tensei 4 was announced a while back and today a new trailer has been unveiled during the latest Nintendo Direct, totally focused on 3DS games.
As you can tell from the footage, it’s evident how Atlus will be putting more enphasis on the art elements of the previous main entry of the series: the locations look original and great, as well as the overall setting which won’t be straying too far from the other games’ setting. After the almost strange setting of Strange Journey, Shin MegaTen 4 goes back to a Japanese setting, where the apocalypse begins and demons are free to roam the land.
For the rest we can expect a lot of the series staples: turn based battles with a lot of demons’ catching and fusing, the press turn system which allows for strategic play and some new elements which will balance the system more and even increase the usually rbutal difficulty level.
Shin Megami Tensei 4 will be released on May 23 in Japan: no news on a possible western release but chances are high for the game to come over, given the rising popularity of the series in the west.
