Can the WiiU Upscale Old Wii Games?

Prior to the launch of the WiiU, Nintendo was questioned as to whether or not the WiiU would be able to upscale old Wii games and they responded that it would not have that ability.

However, according to gamers who have tried, there is a definite difference between Wii games on the Wii and the WiiU. While the games have not be converted into 1080P, the image appears to be much sharper than it was previously.

IGN recently posted a video showcasing the difference between the two using  The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which is an already visually appealing Wii game. The link to the video is posted below:
