As far as quality pinball games go, the Pinball FX series is among the best. The combination of great looks, gameplay and a huge amount of quality tables based on popular franchises and properties is hard to beat, and now PC gamers can experience it too thanks to the magic of a new OS release. Pinball FX 2 has just released on Windows 8, and is available in the Microsoft Store. Each purchase will include the free mars table with 18 other tables available for download for $2.99 each. The tables are: Sorcerer’s Lair, Epic Quest, Earth Defense, Excalibur, Secrets of the Deep, Biolab, Pasha, Rome, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Fantastic Four, Captain America, Thor, The Infinity Gauntlet, World War Hulk, Fear Itself, and Marvel’s The Avengers. Zen Studios also plans to “support Pinball FX2 with new DLC regularly,” so we’re good.
Pinball FX 2 was originally released on October 27, 2010 for the Xbox 360 and was a big success with critics, making it to 88 on metacritic. Eurogamer and GameInformer both gave it a 9 out of 10, GameSpot and OXM gave it a 8.5 out of 10 and TeamXbox gave it a 9.3 out of 10. GamesRadar’s review stated that with Pinball FX 2, “you’ll forget you’re not playing an actual table.” Nick Chester of Destructoid added “Zen already has pinball on consoles nailed.” The game also sold very well, moving over 19,000 copies in its first week on XBLA, with each subsequent DLC release averaging 47,000 to 97,000 units sold.
