GamerSyndrome at E3 2010: 4 Questions with Nintendo’s Julie Gagnon

GamerSyndrome at E3 2010: 4 Questions with Nintendo’s Julie Gagnon

I had the special honor of interviewing a Nintendo of Canada representative at this year’s E3.  It was a big moment for me, and there were dozens upon dozens of questions floating around in my mind.  Unfortunately, time constraints didn’t allow for a full-length interview, but I was able to ask four questions regarding The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, a Donkey Kong 64 sequel, and where Retro Studios stands with Nintendo.  In addition to that, I ended out interview with a little word association, and asked Julie what she’s been playing lately.

GAMERSYNDROME The new Legend of Zelda clearly has a unique style of its own that sets it apart from the rest of the games in the franchise.  What was Nintendo’s inspiration for this graphical style?
JULIE GAGNON Yes, the game’s look is something we are very proud of.  This Zelda is not a sequel to any of the other Zelda games.  It’s an all-new Link in an all-new world, and we wanted to create a different feeling with this style.  It’s something that we feel people are going to love.

I have to ask, because I’m sure most everyone else will be wondering, how will this game stack up compared to Ocarina of Time?
It’s hard to compare this game to Ocarina of Time.  Everyone loved that game.  But you’ve seen the potential in this game.  It will be huge.

Donkey Kong 64 is one of my favorite 3D platformers of all time.  Any plans of making another 3D Donkey Kong game?
You’ve seen the new Donkey Kong Country Returns.  We tried to implement 2D and 3D elements into that game, by allowing you to play in both the foreground and the background.

So right now, Nintendo’s main plans for Donkey Kong are specifically centered around Donkey Kong Country Returns.
That’s right.

Looking at Retro Studios, it seems like they can just keep creating great content for Nintendo.  With Metroid Prime and now Donkey Kong Country Returns, where does Retro stand?
We are definitely keeping them in our plans [for future games].

After asking my four questions, I decided to do a little word association with Julie.

GAMERSYNDROME Retro Studios
JULIE GAGNON Good games.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Fast.

Jet Force Gemini
(Laughs) I’ve never heard of that game.

God of War
Not my kind [of game].

Julie’s a busy woman, and our time was just about up here.  But before she left, I asked her what she had been currently playing…on the competition’s consoles!  She wasn’t opposed to answering this, and she explained to me that she had been playing (and was very impressed with) Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Heavy Rain.

I was very grateful to have been granted such an awesome opportunity, and my interview with Julie Gagnon is something I am proud to be able to share here on GamerSyndrome, and it is something I won’t soon forget!
