Borderlands Strategy Guide – Arid Hills Part 1

After you grab the note in the Zephyr Substation and complete Sledge: The Mine Key, you’ll progress to Sledge: To The Safe House. That safe house is the major place we’re going to next and it’s not exactly a walk in the park. It’s a pretty long journey, so be sure to swing by the Fyrestone bounty board first to pick up Scavenger: Sniper Rifle and The Legend of Moe and Marley. The latter is incredibly tough, but it can be done.

You’ll need to head to the Arid Hills for these quests. Hop in a runner and head over to Shep’s shack. From there, it’s entirely on foot. The entrance to the hills is north of Shep, literally just a stone’s throw away.

As soon as you walk in, you’ll spot a pair of vending machines to your left, as well as a New-U pole. The ammo machine sells level 2 storage decks, so if you have the money, it’s a good idea to increase the ammo counts on your most-used weapons. If you never purchased the level 1 upgrades, don’t worry, as they aren’t even required for level 2!

The first mission we’ll do in the hills is Scavenger: Sniper Rifle, but we’ve got a ways to go to get there and there are plenty of enemies along the way. After passing through the pipes in front of you, you’ll fight a wave of skags. You have two options here. You can head up the hill to the right and fight off more skags, or you can hop across a series of metal platforms along the left wall and bypass the skags entirely. It all depends on whether or not you want the XP. There isn’t any good loot to be had if you take the right path.

As you approach the house, sneak up behind it. You should be able to reach the roof by taking a running leap off of the dumpster. The roof is a great vantage point to take out the surrounding bandits. Your first order of business should be to take out the two enemies on the bridge to the north. You can’t miss them. After you dispatch them, enemies should starting coming out of the house below you and you can open fire from above. If you need to rest, simply crouch down and back away from the edge until you’re no longer in their sights.
