2K Marins highly successful, highly atmospheric and highly story driven game BioShock 2 has been quite low on what one might call worthy downloadable content. We have been given DLC packages that have mainly focused on the multiplayer element of the game which came with such not-so-necessities as a higher level cap and added bonuses such as extra tonics, a few mask’s for the player (Sinclair’s solution test pack), as well as a few more maps, with an added mode where players could opt to try to sink a hole in one with the oppositions head (Rapture metro map pack), then 2K Marin focused more on the single player which was a BioShock version of the popular range of modes in which you are pitted against swarms of enemies such as Gears of Wars Horde and Halo: ODST’s Firefight (The protector trials pack). Although the multiplayer was indeed a relatively fun experience and its charm was loosely based on the fact that it didn’t take itself terribly seriously a few extra maps of which are just recycled campaign maps and a tonic here and there are not really going to force the already thread bare pockets of gamers to cough up the Microsoft points that could thoroughly be devoured by what grand summer Xbox live arcade games are available.
BioShock 2 will now finally get to ironically wet its whistle on some story driven downloadable content in the shape of Minerva’s Den. 2K Marin are of course keeping their cards close to their chest at the moment but this does promise to be the ace up the sleeve we have been waiting for. It’s quite hard to imagine a truly innovative route that the story can be pulled down without the wear and tear that was starting to be strewn upon the story in the climatic stages of the campaign mode but the chance to get to explore a bit more of rapture and in the control of a new character is something worthy of a play through. The character is unknown at this point in time other than that the character has teamed up with Bridget Tenenbaum to loosen a dictators control over one of the major districts in Rapture, although I wouldn’t loosen your boots just yet as it is just another big daddy, just one not yet seen.
2K president Christoph Hartmann had this to say: “Minerva’s Den is a substantial addition that will give players more of what they’re looking for: more story, more narrative, more game play and more of Rapture”.
The DLC will also come with the ability for the player to “Wield new high-tech weaponry and a devastating new Plasmid to best the towering threats in Minerva’s Den.” And it just wouldn’t be Rapture without “more dangerous Splicers” and “upgraded Security Bots that throw rockets and lightning bolts”.
The DLC will indeed be the final instalment for BioShock 2, coming out on all platforms (Xbox 360,PS3 and PC) later this fall.
