According to venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, Playstation is a “poison” leading children down a capitalist “road to hell”.
“Those games they call ‘PlayStation’ are poison,” Chavez said. “Some games teach you to kill. They once put my face on a game, ‘you’ve got to find Chavez to kill him.’
The news, which was cited in a AFP report, covering Chavez’s latest radio show, also claims that the president feels that Playstation games “promote the need for cigarettes, drugs and alcohol so they can sell them. That’s capitalism, the road to hell”
In October 2009, the Venezuelan National Assembly implimented a ban on all violent games. Those breaking this law can be punished with up to a 5 year prison sentence.
Some of those that oppose Chavez’s leadership have claimed that, since his appointment in 1999, 100,000 people have been murdered. The Venezuelan government claims that these figures have been exaggerated.
