New World Record for Most Expensive Virtual Item

A slice of an MMO has recently been auctioned off for $330,000. The item in question is the Crystal Palace Space Station from the Entropia Universe MMO. The buyer, Buzz “Erik” Lightyear, has set a new world record with the investment and is now the proud owner of the world’s most expensive virtual item.

The Entropia online community has 810,000 registered participants, spanning across 220 countries. The Crystal Palace Space Station was built in 2004 and is one of two that were constructed.

According to the Swedish developers, MindArk, Buzz will need to set a reasonable tax rate for the station and keep it stocked with things to hunt. He’ll be able to earn PED, which he will then be able to convert into actual money.

Buzz commented on his purchase in the game forums, where he stated:

“I was really hoping to win this auction. I believe Crystal Palace can be amazing since it won’t just be owned by some investor, but instead by a very active, and very old player who loves Entropia Universe.”
