Acclaimed developer Relic is creating an action heavy Warhammer 40 000 game for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Titled “Warhammer 40 000: Space Marine”, the game was shown for the first time at E3 2009. You can watch the debut trailer below, which consists of some CGI and a portion of gameplay.
If you’re wondering where the “bald space marine” cliche that dominates so many games originated from, you need look no further. The popular Warhammer 40 000 board games (a game somewhat like Dungeons and Dragons, based on dice rolls) is generally credited with creating the stereotype.
Warhammer 40 000: Space Marine, as its title indicates, is clearly not afraid to be labelled with this genre convention, as it features a literally bald space marine quite prominently in the below trailer. If they created the cliche, it seems reasonable that they have nothing to fear from it.
Few details about the game have been released so far, but Relic has hinted that RPG elements such as character development and “loot” hunting could be in the game. Relic’s last game, Warhammer 40 000: Dawn of War 2, was a real time strategy PC exclusive that had a great deal of RPG customization and loot gathering. We’ll see if they go a similar route with this console exclusive action game.
The gameplay portions of the trailer features a squad of four Space Marines, who are shown wielding various weapons. The emphasis on the four characters might indicate a potential four player co-operative mode. Relic hasn’t confirmed or denied this when asked by the media.
Relic is known for making high quality games based on the Warhammer 40 000 franchise, and hopefully Space Marine will be no exception. Four player co-op and an emphasis on RPG customization might make it an appealing title, even to those who aren’t fans of the action genre.
No release date has been announced for Warhammer 40 000: Space Marine. It is coming to the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles.
