On September 18, 2009 Ubisoft launched their new service called UPlay. UPlay allows players to earn extra rewards when they play their games. Right now, the service is in beta, and only has three games that participate in it, but Ubisoft has stated that they will start to include the service more regularly with their releases.
The service is currently out for Assassin’s Creed II, Splinter Cell Conviction, and R.U.S.E. The UPlay service works with all of the systems the games are released for, so if players have preference for PlayStation 3 over the PC, they need not worry about being excluded.
How Does UPlay Work?
To get started with UPlay, players must have a UBI.com account. If they do not, they will need to create one here. (Please note that players can also create a UPlay account from inside the UPlay enabled game.) Once they have their account, all players need to do is play the UPlay enabled game. As they meet certain achievements, they will earn “Units” (Units is the virtual currency of the UPlay store.) As players earn Units, they can spend them to unlock bonus content in any Uplay enabled game. For instance, let’s say the player earns an achievement in Assassin’s Creed. They will then be able to spend their Units to unlock something in R.U.S.E. Unlockable content for games includes items such as new weapons, new maps and areas, and other upgrades.
The achievements to earn these Units range from easy to difficult, and pay out Units respectfully. To give an idea of the current achievements, in Assassin’s Creed (For the PC, achievements vary slightly by the different systems) the current achievements are:
- Enter the Animus 2.0.
- Discover the Assassin’s Tomb inside the catacombs under Santa Maria Novella.
- Complete training and reenter the Animus.
- Escape the hideout.
