The Future of Fallout

Fallout 3 was definitely a good game. Regardless, it looked nothing like it’s predecessor. Not to mention the mess Bethesda did with all those DLC’s turning the otherwise good story into mush(alien abductions). But don’t worry, your favorite post apocalyptic universe has a future.. Let’s see what’s planned.

Fallout: New Vegas

First, new vegas won’t be an Add-on, expansion or anything like that. The game is in development by Obsidian Entertainment. Obsidian are the ex Black Isle – original creators of Fallout. So it’s no wonder that Bethesda invited them to work on New Vegas. The game will be set in Las Vegas, or at least what’s left of it after the US – China war that destroyed the world. Some more good news – the key people that created Fallout 1 & 2 are the key people working on New Vegas. So you can see why fans get their hopes up just hearing the name.

Project V13

Interplay, the original publishers of Fallout didn’t like giving up their MMO project over to Bethesda. So they kept it, with several terms of course. First, the game development had to be started in two years(it already is). Second, the game budget had to be over 30 million(it is), third it has to be released in six years. The engine used for Project V13(in case you’re an idiot Project V13 is the Fallout MMORPG) is the one created by Masthead Studios, a Bulgarian development studio(by the way – i’m Bulgarian) and Masthead are co-developers on Project V13 while working on their official project – Earthrise.

Fallout 4

There have been rumors, that Bethesda are hard at work on the sequel to Fallout 3 – Fallout 4. Quoting Bethesda’s Pete Hines : “The whole reason we went out and acquired the license and that we now own Fallout is that we clearly intended to make more than one.” He also added: “This is not something we’re going to do once and then go away and never do it again. When that will be or how long that will be God only knows, but we acquired it specifically because we wanted to own it and develop it and work on it like we do with The Elder Scrolls.”

Thoughts and Speculations

In case you don’t want my lame opinions, close the page. First i’ll speculate about New Vegas. The fact is, that Obsidian aren’t Black Isle. They may be the same people(at most) but they aren’t Black Isle. That doesn’t mean they’re bad – they have proven it with KOTOR 2 and Neverwinter Nights 2. The second thing to be take into consideration about New Vegas is the fact that Bethesda won’t let Obsidian do whatever they want, and we’ll likely see Fallout 3 in Vegas. I sure hope i’m wrong, but odds are – we will.

Next is Project V13. The fact that the game is an MMO immediately turns into a disadvantage. Lot’s of fans won’t even try it or even be able to. Also, when was the last time an original MMORPG was released? Guild Wars. Yeah, that about does it. Also, Interplay are working on the game which means that it won’t be created by the original developers. We’ll have to wait and see.

Fallout 4 – what to say about a game that isn’t even announced yet. Bethesda turned Fallout 3 into a soap opera with all those DLC’s. Not to mention how buggy the game was. So, that the only thing to say about this project right now.

If you’re one of those Fallout fans that were disgusted with Fallout 3, you probably already realize that the game will never be the same again. Keep playing Fallout 1,2 & Tactics over and over again. But if you’re an enthusiastic fan that likes what Bethesda did with Fallout you can expect a bright future.
