Sega Announces 7 Retro Titles for XBLA and 1 for PSN

Sega confirmed that they are bringing a total of 7 games to the Xbox Live Arcade, one of which will also be making its way to the PlayStation Network. They will all be “re-worked” for high definition resolutions – which will likely consist of a smear filter. They will also feature online leaderboards to help foster competition among those who’ve mastered the games back in the day. Without further ado, Sega will be bringing:

  1. Gunstar Heroes (XBLA/PSN)
  2. Altered Beast (XBLA)
  3. Comix Zone (XBLA)
  4. Phantasy Star II (XBLA)
  5. Shinobi (XBLA)
  6. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (XBLA)
  7. Sonic & Knuckles (XBLA)

Most importantly for Sonic fans, Sega confirms that if you buy Sonic & Knuckles, which will be the last of the titles to be released, you’ll be able to utilize its lock-on ability as long as you own Sonic the Hedgehog 2 or Sonic the Hedgehog 3. That’s right, this means that Sonic 3 & Knuckles will finally be able available for download onto your Xbox 360! Pricing has not been confirmed, but previous Sega classics have been 400 Microsoft points which is the equivalent of $4.99 US.

Online play will be available in all games except for Comix Zone, Phantasy Star II, and Shinobi. Definitely a plus for fans of the co-operative action of Gunstar Heroes. Whether or not this means the co-op mode of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be reworked remains to be seen. All these games are currently set for a summer release, which is a bit odd as there are 7 games for 12 weeks of summer. Microsoft usually only releases one XBLA title per week.
