New Super Mario Bros. Wii – World 1 Star Coin Locations

New Super Mario Bros. Wii – World 1 Star Coin Locations

In my last Strategy Guide I covered the basic controls of Mario and the best moves to use in particular situations.  In this strategy guide we will go over the location of the Star Coins in each level and how to get each one.  First it is important to know exactly what the purpose of the Star Coins are.  There are three Star Coins in each level and there are many levels scattered throughout the each world.  After you have beat the game (World 8 ) you will have an opportunity to play through another world (World 9).  Each level in World 9 is opened by finding all of the Star Coins in its corresponding world.  So in order to open World 9 level 1 you will need to find every Star Coin in World 1.

This may sound like a simple task, but many Star Coins are hidden very well and require mastery of certain moves of Mario or particular power-ups that may be hard to come by at that particular moment.  Even with the strategy guide you may still find some of the Star Coins difficult to obtain unless you have firm grip on the advanced techniques of Mario.  If you find that you are lacking in those skills then please read my previous strategy guide in the link above in order to practice.

I will begin this series of walkthroughs with the locations of the Star Coins in the first World.  I will cover each world in order, and I will try and complete it in a timely fashion for those of you who are anxiously waiting for this information.  So now that we are ready let’s dig in.

World 1

Level 1 Star Coin Locations

Star Coin #1

World 1-1 Star-1

The first Star Coin is located just past the first checkpoint flag above three blocks.  In the ? Block there is a Propeller Head which Mario can use to launch himself in the air to grab the coin.  The coin can also be reached by jumping on top of another players head, but there is no use in that unless you failed to grab the Propeller Head in time.  If that is the case then you may need to give this game some more practice before you move on.  Either way, this is an easy coin to grab and should be no problem.

Star Coin #2

World 1-1 Star 3-1

This Star Coin is obtained by first entering the pipe shown above.  The pipe is located towards the end of the level just past the Red Ring.  You will have to be quick to catch this pipe because it will disappear out of sight if you wait too long.

World 1-1 Star 3-2

Once you have fallen out of the pipe then you can reach this coin one of two ways.  If you still have Propeller Head Mario then you can shake your Wii Remote to spin up to the coin.  Otherwise you can Wall Jump off of the side of the pipes to reach the coin.  If you need refreshing on the Wall Jump then go here.  Upon exiting the pipe on the left you will notice that you appear to be inside the ground, and in fact, you are.  In this game there are many instances where secret passages are hidden inside a wall or in the ground, you just have to find them.

Level 2

Star Coin #1

World 1-2 Star 1

This coin is found at the very beginning of the level and is very simple to get.  All you really have to do is stand on the purple platform that looks like a crystal and wait for the left end to see-saw up towards the coin and you can jump up and get it.

Star Coin #2

World 1-2 Star 2-1

In order to reach the pipe that you need to go into in order to find the next Star Coin, you need to learn how to work this platform.  When a character jumps on the platform they take control of it.  A player can tilt the platform to the left or the right by tilting their Wii Remote in much the same way.  To raise the right side of the platform simply lift the right side of the Wii Remote higher than the left side and Voila!  Once you have reached the top just jump up on the platform above and enter the pipe.

World 1-2 Star 2-2

Once inside you will find a P Switch which will temporarily turn everything that is a block into a coin and everything that is a coin into a block.  Hit the P Switch and quickly climb your way to the top of the screen, trying to avoid or stomp the Goomba, and grab the second Star Coin.

Star Coin #3

World 1-2 Star 3-1

The third coin is at the end of the level and is hard to miss.  It will appear to be impossible to reach, but it isn’t.  You will need to smash the blocks above the green pipe just past the Piranha Plant using the Ground-Pound technique that we covered in the previous post.  Make sure to hold the down button on the D-Pad until you are all the way through the blocks.  Go down the pipe.

World 1-2 Star 3-2

Upon entering the room you will notice a POW Block which you can either hit from below or grab and throw onto the ground.  Once you do this the Star Coin will fall from above and you can grab it.

Level 3

Star Coin #1

World 1-3 Star 1

Early in the level you will be able to grab a Yoshi from one of the ? Blocks.  You will need either this Yoshi or a Propeller Head in order to get the Star Coins in this level.  They aren’t hard to get, one of them may be hard to find, but they require only Yoshi or Propeller Head to retrieve them.  For this particular Star Coin just grab Yoshi and perform a Flutter-Jump to reach the coin.  The coin isn’t far from where you first grab Yoshi, and it’s in plain sight.

Star Coin #2

World 1-3 Star 2-1

This coin is a little ways down from the previous coin and requires that you find a “hidden area” in order to get it.  Look for a series of pipes with one pipe being orange and having a Piranha Plant inside.  Underneath the orange pipe is where you will find the hidden pipe that leads down to the coin.  Two pipes over to the left of the orange pipe is a pipe that is set lower than the rest.  Jump on top of that pipe and walk to the right and you will walk into the wall where you can now see the hidden pipe.  Go down the pipe.

World 1-3 Star 2-2

Now that you are inside you can either perform a simple Flutter-Jump, or use propeller head Mario to grab the coin that is in plain sight.

Star Coin #3

World 1-3 Star 3

The third and final coin of the level is right towards the end next to a red pipe that is in the shape of an L.  You must jump up onto this pipe with Yoshi and perform a Flutter-Jump to reach it, but beware of the Piranha Plant inside.  Or you can use Propeller Head Mario to jump up and grab it.

Tower

Star Coin #1

World 1-Dungeon Star 1

The Tower is sort of a mid-world dungeon where you will fight the boss once before you fight him in the final castle.  You will have to make your way to the top of the tower to fight the boss though.  After heading up this tower a few levels you will see the first Star Coin in plain sight, but it is a little harder to reach than some of the Star Coins you have had to get because it requires timing.  The swinging platform at the bottom of the picture above swings back and forth from left to right and you will want to jump on the brown platform just to the left of the swinging platform.  The brown platform moves in and out of the wall, so you will have to wait for the brown platform to move out of the wall when the swinging platform moves to the left.  Once on the brown platform quickly jump above to reach the Star Coin.  If all of this is too difficult then just start out the level with a Propeller Head and propel your way to the coin.

Star Coin #2

World 1-Dungeon Star 2

This Star Coin is hidden very well and you will likely never find it without a walkthrough unless by accident or a very sharp eye and mind.  When you notice the moving brown platforms on the left of the picture above and the checkpoint flag on the platform above then you will know you are there.  Just make your way to the section on the right and you will be able to wall jump your way through the ceiling and into a hidden section that houses the coin.  You don’t have to be “Big” Mario to get there, you just need to know how to wall jump.

Star Coin #3

World 1-Dungeon Star 3

Once you get past the second set of crushing brown platforms you will notice a brown platform moving from side to side.  This is the platform that you will need to jump on in order to get the next star coin.  You will notice two paths leading up, one to the left and one to the right; the Star Coin is located on the path to the right.  In order to get this Star Coin you will once again need to know how to Wall-Jump.  Wait for the sliding brown platform to move toward the path on the right, then you will want to wall jump off of the left hand wall onto the center wall segment and work your way towards the Star Coin.

Level 4

Star Coin #1

World 1-4 Star 1

The fourth level is a water level and it will test your skills enough itself without worrying about getting Star Coins.  You will want to make sure you have an Ice power-up throughout the entire level in order to get the Star Coins because each will require you to freeze something.  This first Star Coin is just past the checkpoint flag and you will need to freeze the two Cheep Cheeps in order to reach the coin.  Once they are frozen simply jump on top of them and over to the first Star Coin.

Star Coin #2

World 1-4 Star 2

This Star Coin is a little tougher to get because it requires timing.  The two pipe jets on either side of the coin will force you down if you try to swim up to the coin.  The best way to get the coin is to freeze one of the Cheep Cheeps below when it is directly below the coin and stand on top of the frozen fish while it floats you up to the coin.

Star Coin #3

World 1-4 Star 3

Towards the end of the level you will notice a Star Coin just below a Clam Shell.  You will also notice that you can’t reach it because the bubble-jet pipe pushes you right back up and out of the way of the coin.  Good news is that you can fix this problem by freezing the Urchin once it is directly above the pipe.  When the Urchin breaks free of the ice it will automatically go to sleep and float down over the bubble-jet pipe which will allow you to swim down and get the final coin in this level.

Level 5

Star Coin #1

World 1-5 Star 1-1

This first coin has two parts, first you must reveal this vine that will lead you up to the next area where the Star Coin is hidden.  The vine is at the beginning of the level and in order to get there you will need the Propeller Head or you will need to get a running start to get up to the platform.  Once on the platform you will have to run and slide under the blocks to hit them and reveal the vine.  Go up the vine.

World 1-5 Star 1-2

After you have reached the top of the vine you will need to ride the ? Blocks to get above the Star Coin and jump down to get it, because if you try to jump up to get it you will be blocked by invisible blocks.

Star Coin #2

World 1-5 Star 2

This Star Coin has a simple concept but it can be a little tricky to get.  You will reach a set of large green and white blocks.  At the last block you will see a Star Coin, you will need to either ride the block until it is almost vertical and then jump across to grab it and jump onto the platform, or if you have Propeller Head Mario you can jump down onto the coin and shake your Wii Remote at the last second to propel yourself up.

Star Coin #3

World 1-5 Star 3

The third and final Star Coin is easy to get, you just need to make sure that you jump and land in the right places at the right time because you run the risk of missing your landing and falling down to your death.  If you have Propeller Head Mario then you should have no trouble getting the coin, otherwise you will need to get a running start to jump up and get the coin.

Level 6

Star Coin #1

World 1-6 Star 1

The first Star Coin is located just above the third rotating piece of ground that you come to.  It is very simple to get you just need to have Propeller Head Mario or you need to jump off of the nearby flying koopa to reach it.

Star Coin #2

World 1-6 Star 2

The next Star Coin is even easier to get because all you need to do is jump on the rotating earth and jump up onto the small platform with Star Coin located on it.  You don’t need to have any special power-up for this coin.

Star Coin #3

World 1-6 Star 3-1

When you cross the checkpoint flag you will reach another rotating piece of earth; jump on that piece of earth and it will rotate to the left.  As it continues to rotate you will be able to jump onto a hidden ledge (shown above) where there will be a pipe that you will need to enter in order to find the third Star Coin.

World 1-6 Star 3-2

Once you are inside of the the cave you will need to quickly jump over to the left and up onto the platform with the coin.  If you wait too long you will have to battle goombas that put up a tough fight due to the fast speed that the floor rotates in.  Once you have the coin just make sure that you time your jump off of the platform just right to avoid those crazy goombas.

Castle

Star Coin #1

World 1-Castle Star 1

The first coin is above the fourth cog wheel and is very simple to get.  You don’t need any power-ups, you just need to jump up and over and grab it while avoiding the Dry Bones.

Star Coin #2

World 1-Castle Star 2

This coin is easy to nab as well you just need to have your timing right.  Get close to the gap and wait for the large Thwomp to drop down and break the barrier that is guarding the coin.  As it slowly lifts back up towards the ceiling you will have time to drop down and grab the coin.  Wait for the Thwomp to drop back down towards you but stay in the hole where the Star Coin was located because the Thwomp can’t hurt you there.  As it raises back up you can jump out.

Star Coin #3

World 1-Castle Star 3-1

The third coin is located just towards the end of the level and you will notice it when you see a hidden green pipe below a small orange platform.  Stand on the large cog and wait for it to bring you under the orange platform and carefully jump over to the green pipe and go down.

World 1-Castle Star 3-2

After you go down the pipe hit the P switch and use the new floor to jump over toward the Star Coin and Wall-Jump off of the right hand wall and over to grab the Star Coin and land back on the floor.  Jump quickly back over to the pipes before time runs out and the floor turns back into coins.  Go up the Orange pipe.
