Music Soundtracks in games – Songs I want to see

I was excited to play a few games recently because big name composers have been attached to games that are coming out like Hans Zimmer doing the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 soundtrack and Jesper Kyd doing the soundtrack for Assassins Creed 2. This got me to thinking abotu music that I would love to hear in games, licensed music that people might or might not know.

I have a huge play list of music on my computer and I will be the first to admit that most games soundtracks get to be boring after the 30th to 40th hour spent in the world. I have my specific play lists for certain types of game and games stored on my 360, but there are 10 songs/bands that I would love to see used in games and I have scenes they would be great for too!

These songs will cover almost every genre out there, and feel free to list a song or two that you would love to be used in a game. Also, as far as I know these songs have never been used in games.

11. 10th Man down – Nightwish

This song is one of the most powerful songs ever created by man, very, very strong assault song, or on a massive battlefield. Nightwish has crafted an emotionally powerful song about war, and the nature of man. I would love to see this song be used in a scene or level that is an all out melee combat situation. I can definitely see this being used effectively in an RPG or fantasy based action game. I have used this numerous times while taking down hordes of Locusts while playing Gears of War 2 in Horde or online. It starts off soft, then the kicking drums and guitar rhythm section kicks in and keeps repeating the same

10. Alone with the sea – Hurt

This song was literally haunting me for the first two weeks I had ever heard it, it was in my dreams, in my waking moments, and everything in between. It was there when I woke up, when I went to sleep… I was haunted by the song. The song is about a man who wasted his life and love on a boat that he knew would not work, and all the pain and emotional hell the man goes through.

I would like to see this song used as an intro to a sad, lonely character who might have done something like this during their life. It’s just an emotionally powerful song that could be used by the right people in an emotionally arresting scene.

9. Oxyacetylene – Cubanate

One of best”I’m going to beat you down” songs I’ve ever heard in my life! This song is all about beating your opponent senseless and leaving them broken and bloody. This would be a great intro song or during an important fight, especially melee or short range shooting with either pistols or shotguns.

8. Cross Bone Style – Cat Power

This is another song that I heard and it haunted me for weeks on end, and the movie that I originally heard it in haunted me too. The search for the wrong eyed Jesus was a documentary film about a man who came from England to find the musicians of a style now labeled as dark country… it’s basically rebel or outlaw country with a dark, nightmare inducing twist sometimes.

The song is about a woman asking a man whom had seen some things that cannot be explained easily to rescue her… From what she never says, but she’s asking for his help. This song would be a great song for a scene where things are serene, but not quite or during a long, lonely travel to a loved one after something dark or just plain weird has happened to the character(s).

7. Sweet thing – Keith Urban

This song is just a fun, I’m in love and there is nothing the universe can do to stop me kind of song. It would be a great song for a love story that is growing and being fleshed out by a cut scene or possibly in the start of a dating section of a game.

Something that I wish games did that used real music in, especially sand box titles is the ability to sync up music with the visuals. Something that I’ve always wanted was licensed music in a GTA or something similar that would correlate with what the mission is… Life is funny like that, songs will start and end at the most appropriate moments, and the wrong moments too.

6. Silent Running – Mike and the Mechanics

This song is about the government and religious leaders fighting for control of the population and a group of freedom fighters fighting both sides. The music video is actually one of the more bone chilling videos I’ve ever seen, it scares me to this day, but I love the song.

Like I said this is a freedom fighter song, it deserves to be used skillfully in the beginning of a game where an average Joe has to pick up a gun or hammer and fight for his survival.

5. Frontline – Pillar

Ok, this is the only religious song I can overlook the well, religion in because the song is just one of the best rallying songs I’ve ever heard in my life. This song even after learning it was an almost militant Christian band still comes to mind off and on, just because of the power this song can raise within you to want to fight, to surge ahead and fight till your done.

4. Raise your hands to heaven – Breathe

This is one of the saddest songs I’ve ever heard in my life. If you actually listen to the lyrics it’s honestly about a man asking his lover to be there one day, when he can come back. Whether it’s becauseĀ  he’s going off to work, war or just because they can’t get along anymore, you don’t know. You just feel this ache and pain in your heart for these two people, especially the singer.

šŸ˜€ This would be great song for a love scene where the main is leaving to go to war, or something similar. Imagine if Gears 2 had this song in a cutscene between Dom and Maria… especially with what happens to them in the course of the game.

3. Clint Mansell

His scores are rare, but if you’ve ever seen Requim for a dream, you know his music is hauntingly dark and disturbing. I’ve come across a remix of the Gears of war theme with the requim theme and to be honest, it’s one of the coolest songs I’ve ever heard.

Clint Mansell would be great for a game that is epic, large and disturbing. I want this man to score music for a game, any game that he wants to score to.

2. Life is beautiful – Sixx A.M.

This power ballad honoring life, love and everything inbetween is just a song that would be great at the end of an action game where the charectar has gone through the fire and came out the other side nearly burned to a crisp (Die Hard game anyone?) so to speak.

1. Gangsta’s Paradise – Coolio

This song is what everyone thinks of when they think gangster rap. I know that game studios are probably avoiding this one due to cliches and other “WTF are you doing” moments in the office, but I think this would be great for a sandbox gangster title to use as a theme at some point… But that’s just me.

Like I said, if you have songs that you would like to see used in games, leave it in the comment section!

  1. Number 5 is one of my all time favorite songs as well. Number 10 is also pretty high in my list. Nightwish have actually done a few songs for games, mostly for trailers(Risen and Spellborn). Sonata Arctica are also popular for their work in gaming. Over all, i’d like to see some of my favorite songs in a video game too, but only if they are well placed and blend with the game’s atmosphere.

  2. number 8 is a definite but number 1 gangsters paradise? haha that’s such a classic! Another song I would like to hear from the Rap Genera is Snoop Dogg the song where he says “whats my mutha f*k|n name?” .. Serial Killa.
