On November 23, 2009, Visceral Games, an Electronic Arts studio released the Go To Hell application on Facebook in promotion of Dante’s Inferno™.
The game allows players to send people, groups, etc to Hell. When banishing someone to Hell, players will first need to select the friend that they are punishing. Then, they’ll need to choose one of the nine layers of Hell from Dante’s Inferno (the poem.) For those who are not familiar with the poem, the nine layers of Hell are: Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Anger, Heresy, Violence, Fraud, and Treachery. Once they have selected the layer of Hell, players are required to add a comment saying why they’re sending that person or group to Hell. Once a person or group is sent to Hell, the minions of Hell (the players) vote on whether to condemn or absolve. Then, after a certain amount of voting, players can pick a punishment for the person or group that was condemned.
It is quite interesting to see who people condemn to Hell, and for those that want to see who has sinned the most, punished the most souls, or more enjoyable statistics, players can “view Hell” to see this information. For instance, at this moment, Megan Fox is Hottest Hellion (most sinful) person, and she was banned to Lust. Jonathan Knight, executive producer said “This app is awesome! Not only will it be a blast to see who the world sends to hell, but it’s also a great opportunity to take Dante’s notion of the 9 circles of hell and make it current and relevant for people who may not be familiar with the poem. Let the damning begin.”
I’d have to agree with Jonathan on this one. The app is fun to use, both for damning people and to see who has been damned. Of course, the app will lose its luster if people play it for long amounts of time, but that’s how it is will all Facebook applications.
