UFC 2009: Undisputed

If you are looking for a good fighting game that will always keep you on the edge, then UFC 2009 is worth a try. The game was developed by Yuke’s Osaka and Published by THQ.  It was released, in the United States on May 19, 2009 and has been a  popular game on PlayStation 3 in particular. The other supporting platform for this game is the Xbox 360.


UFC 2009: Undisputed is a mixed martial arts video game that has a total of six high standing fighting styles for the fighters or rather the players in the game. It also has an Ultimate Fighting Championship properties and fighters so you are up for an interesting challenge. The different fighting styles include, Muay Thai, judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Boxing and kickboxing. You are allowed to use two of the above methods at a time depending on the category that you select when playing. They are two categories namely, the standup category and the grapping-style category. The standup category allows you to use boxing, kickboxing or Muay thai. The grappling-style method on the other hand consists of the remaining trio, which are the Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo or wrestling.

A point to note is that this video game is the first and only release of the UFC after the last release in 2004 of the game UFC: Sudden Impact. This makes it the only UFC game that has been released under THQ’s agreement with the UFC in 2007.

The game is more on realistic terms, as it features over a 100 UFC personalities. With over 30 000 polygons used for fighter models, you can only personally conclude that in this game, the models are favorably- detailed before you play the video game.

There are the normal five weight classes, namely, Heavyweights, Light heavy weights, Middleweights, Welterweights and Lightweights. In the Heavyweights category, you have the likes of Eddie Sanchez, Frank Mir, Brock Lesnar representing the United States and Cheick Kongo representing France just to mention a few. In the Light Heavyweights category, Houston Alexander, Stephen Bonar, Maurico Rua, Wanderlei Silva and Quinton Jackson are only some of the fighters while Jason MacDonald, Demian Maia, Amir Sadollah and Evan Tanner fall in the Middleweights category.
Thiago Alves, Chris Lyte and Georges St Pierre are from the Welterweights category, while, Joe Stevenson, Sean Sherk, BJ Penn, Gray Maynard and Hermes Franca are part of the Lightweights.
Each weight class has sixteen fighters with the exception of Lightweights that have a total of seventeen.

The reception is exceptional and follows a positive trend as Metacritic gave them an 87% after five reviews while Game Rankings gave them an 84% after twenty-one reviews.

I wonder if there are any cheats or Easter eggs for this game? it would be cool to get guys like Tank Abbot or Royce Gracie in the ring to match with Tito Ortiz or Georges St-Pierre.. although they would probably get worked pretty good by these new age fighters that basically train to defeat any fighting style.
