Final Fantasy XIII Ships 1.8 Million Units in Japan

I find it very interesting that Japanese culture has such a fascination with American culture.  Even games like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are created for Americans.  Rather than have game covers that say Final Fantasy XIII written in Japanese, they opt to stick with American words.  Yesterday Tokyo, Japan they had a launch for Final Fantasy XIII; and  even though everything else may be covered in Japanese characters anything related to the game wasn’t.  You can clearly see this in the picture below.

Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada and producer Yoshinori Kitase were there to head up the even and launch the game, and all I can say is, “what I would give to be in Japan right now.”  Launches are always exciting no matter where you are, but this is a huge launch for Japan.  The crowds were said to seem larger than those for the launch of Dragon Quest IX earlier this year.  Square-Enix shipped 1.8 million units of the game out in Japan, but it is still unclear as to how many copies will end up in the hands of consumers.

No game for PS3 has ever sold 1 million copies in Japan, but speculation says that Final Fantasy XIII may be the game to break that record.  With numbers like 1.8 million units shipped, I wouldn’t be surprised if they not only broke the record, but smashed it in to millions of pieces.  We will keep you updated.
